The death of his friend, James Hutton, moved Playfair to compose a biographical memoir, which gradually became a reply to the critics of Hutton's theories of geology. This in turn gave rise to Playfair's geological work Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth. James Hutton, whose Theory of the Earth (1795) marks the conventional discovery of deep time in British Geological thought, might have occupied but a footnote to history if his unreadable treatise had not been epitomized his friend, and brilliant prose stylist, John Playfair, in Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth (1802 amplification of Hutton’s Theory of the Earth, which had originally been presented as a paper read in 1785 to the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was expanded into the two-volume work of 1795. Playfair’s efforts resulted in Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth(1802).
